被日本气象厅称为接近最强等级的珊珊台风在鹿儿岛登陆，日本NHK统计到当地下午4时，有74人轻重伤、3人死亡、1人失踪。3名死者是前天（27日）在爱知县蒲郡市被土石流淹没的民房罹难，消防单位救出2人。
NHK通过各地新闻中心统计，宫崎30人伤者最多、其次是鹿儿岛23人，长崎、熊本、佐贺、大分及福冈县都有人在风灾中受伤，合计71人，加上土石流2人、三重县1人，累积74人受伤。鹿儿岛市的60多岁男性船长驾船落海，仍行踪不明。
